Eleven years ago, the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao set a record. Now it’s time for a rematch.
Eleven years after their mega-fight in 2015, aging boxing legends Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao want to face each other again. On Monday, streaming service Netflix announced that it will broadcast the spectacular fight from the Sphere in Las Vegas on September 19. “I’ve already fought Manny and beaten him,” Mayweather said. “The result will be the same.”
The American recently announced that he would resume his professional career after a planned exhibition fight against Mike Tyson. The 48-year-old, a former world champion in several weight classes, is undefeated in 50 professional fights.
Boxing: “The fans have waited long enough.”
Pacquiao (47) made his comeback last year, four years after his retirement in 2021. “The fans have waited long enough,” said the Philippine national hero. “They deserve this rematch. I want Floyd to be haunted by the one defeat of his career forever — and for him to always remember who inflicted it on him.”
Mayweather, who turns 49 on Tuesday, was nicknamed “Money” and was once the highest-earning athlete in the world. His last fight to date was in 2017 against UFC star Conor McGregor, since then he has been fighting exhibition matches. His duel with former heavyweight world champion Tyson (59) is scheduled for April.
Pacquiao has won world titles in eight different weight classes. He also fought Mayweather in Las Vegas in 2015.
It was the most successful pay-per-view event in sports history, with Mayweather winning on points. In sporting terms, however, the “fight of the century” was generally considered a disappointment.
