Laura Siegemund pulls off surprise in Zhengzhou

Laura Siegemund has caused a surprise at the WTA tournament in Zhengzhou, China. The 35-year-old tennis player from Metzingen won 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 against world No. 16 Lyudmila Samsonova in the round of 16 to reach the quarter-finals at the event, which is worth 780,637 dollars.

Siegemund, who had qualified for the main draw, converted her third match point against the Russian after 2:18 hours. Siegemund will now face Jasmine Paolini from Italy on Friday. Samsonova had eliminated Tatjana Maria in the first round.

At the WTA tournament in Seoul, Eva Lys had to retire in the round of 16. The 21-year-old from Hamburg was unable to continue her match against Czech Marie Bouzkova at 1:6 due to shoulder pain. Afterwards, Lys criticised the WTA. “I think it’s time the WTA rethought the constant changing of balls between tournaments. Changing every week is very hard for many players,” Lys wrote on social media.
