Last competitive match over 16 months ago: Ngoumou makes a fresh start in Nice

Since suffering a serious injury in the final stretch of the 2024–25 season, Nathan Ngoumou has not played in a competitive match for Borussia Mönchengladbach. Now the winger is continuing his career in France.

April 6, 2025, will likely remain etched in Nathan Ngoumou’s memory for the rest of his soccer career. Following the away game at St. Pauli (1–1), the forward suffered a torn Achilles tendon, an injury that would have long-term and severe consequences for the remainder of his time in Gladbach. The 26-year-old has not played a single competitive match for the Foals since then—and he will not be making any further appearances.

On Monday, Ngoumou signed a contract in Nice, where the French-born player, who had previously made three appearances in Ligue 1 for his former club Toulouse, hopes to make a fresh start. “Nathan needs to give his career new momentum, and we needed a striker like him. Not only does he possess good soccer skills, but he also showed great determination to join us, which made his transfer easier,” said Maurice Cohen, president of Nice.

Ngoumou scored nine goals for Gladbach

After being signed from Toulouse for eight million euros in the summer of 2022, just before the transfer window closed, Ngoumou played a total of 78 competitive matches for Borussia. During that time, he scored nine goals and provided five assists. “Nathan is coming off a long-term injury and needs time and playing time to return to his former level of performance. These are things we cannot offer him due to the competitive situation. Coupled with his contract running through 2027, the solution we’ve now reached is the best one for all parties,” Gladbach’s sporting director Rouven Schröder is quoted as saying in the press release.

Thanks to regular appearances in the Bundesliga and a change in national association, the former French youth international had been promoted to Cameroon’s senior national team in the spring of 2025, for which he subsequently came off the bench twice in World Cup qualifiers. His dream of further appearances for his father’s homeland was ultimately dashed due to the serious injury.
