Kevin Anderson us open 2018

The temperatures have been rising at the US Open and it is fair to say that the competition itself is really heating up. Yesterday Andy Murray left the tournament after losing to Fernando Verdasco in the second round. The match had some controversy attached, as Murray complained to the officials that Verdasco spoke to his coach during a heat break. Verdasco denies that it happened.

Anderson beat Chardy in straight sets

Another match that took place yesterday was the one between South African Kevin Anderson and his friend Jeremy Chardy. Anderson progressed to the next round with a straight-sets victory – 6-2, 6-4, 6-4. Anderson was in prolific form, hitting 18 aces against Chardy, who could not get a single break point.

Anderson showed his relief at coming through against his friend: “The last game was obviously a little tricky, but overall, I played a great match. It’s always tough playing Jeremy. He’s a great friend of mine.”

Anderson plays young star Shapovalov next in US Open

The fifth seed now plays 28th seed Denis Shapovalov tomorrow as he continues to try and add to his success in the New York Open earlier in the year. The pair has never played each other before, with 19-year-old Canadian Shapovalov only turning pro in 2017. He is definitely one that looks like he will have a bright future in the game after displaying some impressive performances already so early in his career.

Anderson is the favourite to win the round as he is in the form of his life. This year he got the closest in his career to a Grand Slam victory after losing to Djokovic at Wimbledon. He will be hoping that he can take it one stage further this time.
