It’s not over yet at almost 40: Modric signs for Milan

After 13 years in the white jersey, Luka Modric will now be donning the red and black kit. The Croatian record international is moving to AC Milan in Serie A around two months before his 40th birthday.

An era came to an end in Madrid this summer as Luka Modric bid farewell to Real Madrid after 13 years. The Croatian won 28 titles during his time at the club – more than any other player in Real’s history. But at 39, there was no new contract for the captain.

One-year contract with option

On September 9, the 186-time Croatian international celebrates his 40th birthday. An age at which most footballers have long since retired from the sport. But Modric has not had enough yet, continues to play for the national team and has now also found a new club. The central midfielder is embarking on a new adventure, moving to Italy for the first time in his career. AC Milan has struck a deal and signed the experienced player on a one-year contract with an option for a further year.

Modric could replace Tijjani Reijnders in the team led by returning coach Massimiliano Allegri. The Dutch international, who was a fixture in the Rossoneri’s central midfield last season, has moved to Manchester City.

The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner’s professional soccer career began in his home country with Dinamo Zagreb. In 2008, he made the move to England and signed for Tottenham Hotspur, where he immediately became the brains and driving force in midfield. Four years later, he moved to Spain, so his career could end in Italy next year. But who knows: maybe Modric will feel the urge to add another season next summer.
