Audi project manager Mattia Binotto urges patience, explains the long-term development of the team, and offers his support to Nico Hülkenberg
Audi is working flat out on the long-term development of its Formula 1 project—but short-term results are not the main focus. Project manager Mattia Binotto emphasizes that the path to the top will take significantly more time than many fans would like.
Instead of measuring success by individual points finishes, the team is focusing on the sustainable development of all key structures. “We know it takes time to build a solid foundation,” explains Binotto.
This involves far more than just performance on the track. “It’s about the size of the team, its capabilities, expertise, and infrastructure.” It is precisely these areas that must grow first before Audi can consistently compete for top positions.
“Of course, points would be nice”
Binotto understands, however, that expectations are high for the debut of the brand with the four rings. “Of course, you want to see progress as quickly as possible,” says the Italian. From a sporting perspective, too, consistent points finishes would be welcome. “It would be great to score points as soon as possible.”
Nevertheless, the team must not let this put pressure on them. “In the end, we have to be realistic. This is the team we are today.” It is precisely on this basis that Audi intends to build step by step. “That will take time.”
That is why Binotto is deliberately looking further ahead. “It takes patience and a focus on the medium and long term. That’s exactly where our ambitions lie, and that’s exactly what we’re building this project for.”
Time and again over the past few months, there has been talk that a completely new factory team could need around five years to establish itself permanently at the top of Formula 1. Even though Binotto doesn’t want to give a specific timeline, he doesn’t fundamentally disagree with that timeframe.
Clear Support for Nico Hülkenberg
In addition to the team’s sporting development, Binotto also discusses the driver lineup. Recently, rumors have been circulating that Carlos Sainz could be a candidate for Audi in the future. For Binotto, however, there is currently no reason to doubt his current lineup.
“We’ve always said that we have a great driver duo.” In doing so, he also refutes the common characterization that Audi has one experienced driver and one rookie. “I’m often told that we have a veteran and a beginner.”
His perspective is different. “In fact, we have two fast drivers. And that’s exactly what makes me happy.”
“Nico still has plenty of gas left in the tank”
Binotto’s praise for Nico Hülkenberg is particularly clear. “Both drivers are very fast,” says the Audi project manager. Speaking of the German, he added with a smile: “Nico still has plenty of gas left in the tank.”
Above all, it’s his attitude that impresses him. “You can see his focus. He’s fast, consistent, and comes across almost like a young driver.” That’s why Binotto isn’t worried at all about his future. “He has many years ahead of him. He’s doing a great job, and we’re very satisfied.”
