Injury shock for Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz has injured his wrist. The injury has disrupted the Spaniard’s preparations for the French Open. It is still unclear how long he will have to take a break.

The Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has suffered a health setback less than six weeks before the start of the French Open.

As the world number two announced at a press conference on Wednesday, his ATP home match in Barcelona has ended prematurely due to pain in his right wrist. It is unclear how long Alcaraz will have to take a break and whether his bid for a hat-trick of titles at the second Grand Slam of the year in Paris (May 24 to June 7) is in jeopardy.

Alcaraz: “More serious injury”

“I won’t be able to continue the tournament,” said Alcaraz one day after his 6:4, 6:2 opening set against Finland’s Otto Virtanen: “I felt my wrist give way on a return during the match. After the examinations, we found out that it was a more serious injury than we all expected and I have to listen to my body so that it doesn’t affect me in the future.”

Alcaraz would have played Tomas Machac from the Czech Republic in the round of 16 on Thursday. “I have to go home to start my recovery as soon as possible with my team, the doctors and the physiotherapist and get back as fit as possible for the upcoming tournaments – or at least try to,” said the Spaniard: “I hope you can see me back on the court as soon as possible.”

Dual with long-term rival Sinner in Paris?

Alcaraz had wanted to continue his preparation for the French Open at the clay court tournament in Barcelona. After losing to Jannik Sinner in the final of the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo last weekend, the 22-year-old local hero could have regained the top spot in the world rankings from his Italian rival by winning his third title.
