IndyCar Markham 2026: Mick Schumacher Advances to Q2 for the First Time

First Top-10 Start for Mick Schumacher Outside of Ovals — Still, He Could Have Done Better — Surprising Crashes by Top Stars in Qualifying

Mick Schumacher (RLL-Honda; 11th) advanced to IndyCar Q2 for the first time during qualifying in Markham. Due to a penalty against Alexander Rossi (ECR-Chevrolet; 8th) for an early engine change, the son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher will start the race from the tenth grid position.

This is the first time Schumacher has advanced beyond Q1 on a non-oval track, where there are no qualifying segments. He finished fourth in the second group, placing him among the top six and advancing to the “Fast Twelve” round.

The Q1 session in the second group was extremely chaotic because Will Power (Andretti-Honda) spun out with two minutes remaining. At that point, not all drivers had completed their fast laps yet, but Schumacher already had. That’s why he stayed in the pits for the final showdown.

Several drivers now had to try to break into the top six with just one practice lap (two would have been preferable for warming up the tires). In the process, Josef Newgarden (Penske-Chevrolet; 25th) spun out, causing another interruption. As a result, street circuit specialist Kyle Kirkwood (Andretti-Honda; 16th), among others, was eliminated.

Schumacher had thus made it into Q2, where another interruption occurred. This time, it was, completely out of the blue, IndyCar dominator Alex Palou (Ganassi-Honda; 12th) who made a rare driving error, triggering the red flag.

This time, Schumacher was the one who suffered, as he hadn’t set a fast lap time yet. The reason was that his tire wasn’t properly secured, and he had to come back in after one lap to have it tightened.
