Indy 500: The starting grid for the 2026 IndyCar highlight in pictures

The 33 IndyCar drivers, including Mick Schumacher, will line up in this order on May 24 for the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500

Qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 was exceptionally held over just one day this year instead of a full weekend. Despite—or perhaps because of—the weather-related shortening, it once again produced a surprise or two.

Who would have thought, for example, that for the 110th edition of the world’s most famous oval race, six of the nine previous Indy 500 winners on the starting grid would fail to make it into the top-12 shootout in qualifying?

Who would have thought that one of the rookies, namely Caio Collet from Brazil, would make it into the Top 12 shootout right off the bat, only to be retroactively excluded from qualifying a few hours later? Instead of starting from P10, Collet will start from P32. The reason is a technical irregularity on his car, which, according to the Foyt team, was due to “a misunderstanding.”

And who would have thought that Alexander Rossi, less than 24 hours after qualifying for the front row, would have a crash in Monday’s practice that briefly sent him to the hospital? On Thursday, despite minor injuries (left hand and right foot), Rossi received medical clearance to race. There were no issues in Friday’s final practice session.

The exact starting order for the 33 competitors—including Mick Schumacher as one of the Indy 500 rookies—as they tackle the highlight of the 2026 IndyCar season on Sunday.
