“I’m feeling a lot of emotions right now”: Gladbach signs Konoplia

Borussia Mönchengladbach has found the reinforcement it was looking for at right back. The Foals have signed Ukrainian international Yukhym Konoplia.

Yukhym Konoplia comes from Shakhtar Donetsk, where he was trained and developed into a regular starter over the past four years. The 26-year-old won the league title with Shakhtar this season and is now leaving the club on a free transfer. The Ukrainian international (27 caps) has signed a three-year contract with the Lower Rhine club.

“Yukhym is a physically strong, enthusiastic, and hard-working fullback,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder. “As a regular starter for the Ukrainian champions, and thanks to his regular international appearances and Champions League matches, he brings a wealth of experience and leadership skills.”

A move looking ahead to the future

Gladbach needs reinforcement at right back, especially since the transfer is also seen as a move anticipating a possible departure of Joe Scally. Rumors have been swirling around the American for some time, and he will also be in the spotlight this summer at the World Cup in the U.S.

Either way: Borussia, led by sporting director Rouven Schröder, is continuing to push forward with its squad planning for the upcoming season. Following goalkeeper Daniel Batz (signed on a free transfer from Mainz) and left-back David Herold (around 3.5 million euros from KSC), Konoplia is already the third new signing for the 2026/27 season.

“I’m very excited to be joining Borussia. It’s a huge club with a long history and an incredible fan base,” Konoplia is quoted as saying. “Right now, I’m feeling a lot of emotions that I can’t really explain. It will take a few days before I fully realize everything.”
