“I was always busy”: Former Bundesliga coach Favre announces his retirement

After almost three years without a coaching job, Lucien Favre is finally bidding farewell to the world of soccer. The 68-year-old is ending a 29-year career as a soccer coach, which also took him to the Bundesliga.

Lucien Favre has ended his long coaching career. The 68-year-old Swiss, who most recently worked at OGC Nice, is retiring from soccer after almost three years without a job. Favre confirmed to Le Matin Dimanche and Sonntagsblick that his enthusiasm had waned in recent months. He is stepping down without regret and with great gratitude.

“I made the decision a long time ago,” Favre said in an interview with Blick. “I was always busy. Now I’m 68, it went by quickly. I almost forgot my age because I was always busy, always tied up. It’s good for me the way it is,” the Swiss continued.

His last coaching position ended in Nice in January 2023. In his 29-year career, Favre celebrated remarkable successes, especially in Switzerland. With FC Zurich, he won the championship in 2006 and 2007 and the Swiss Cup in 2005. He also won the cup with Servette in 2001. Favre also made his mark abroad.

In the Bundesliga between 2007 and 2020

In the Bundesliga, he was in charge at Hertha BSC (2007-2009), Borussia Mönchengladbach (2011-2015), and Borussia Dortmund (2018-2020). At BVB, with whom he won the Super Cup in 2019, he achieved an impressive points average of 2.01 per game in 110 competitive matches. The decision to end his career marks the end of an era in Swiss and international soccer.
