Hitz’s professional career only lasts five more games

Marwin Hitz will end his career after the current season. FCB’s visit to FC Lugano on 17 May will mark the 38-year-old goalkeeper’s last game in professional football.

Back in January 2026, Marwin Hitz announced his intention to leave FC Basel after this season. At the time, the goalkeeper left it open as to whether he would continue his career. Now it’s clear: the veteran is hanging up his boots for good.

The FC Basel number 1 addressed his family, teammates and fans in an emotional statement on the FC Basel homepage: “After many incredibly beautiful, instructive, great and sometimes tough years in professional football, I have decided to end my active career in the summer,” said the Swiss keeper.

He continued: “My biggest thanks go to my family: you have motivated, supported and always accompanied me. Now it’s your turn. (At least until I get on your nerves…) But also a huge thank you to my parents: without your support, this dream come true would never have been possible. And of course I would also like to thank all my coaches, teammates, the clubs and their fans for the journey we have taken together. I was able to learn something new at each of my stops and take something with me for my future path.“

He concludes his emotional statement: ”Thank you today for everything this sport has given me over the years.” The Swiss goalkeeper has been with the Red & Blue since 2022 and has impressed with strong performances over the past four years. FC Basel would like to thank him for his commitment and is looking forward to seeing Hitz in goal again in his final games.

Leaving his mark in the Bundesliga

Before his time on the Rhine, Marwin Hitz played in the Bundesliga for many years. He moved from the FC St. Gallen U21s to the VfL Wolfsburg organization in September 2008. He celebrated the German championship with the Wolves in the 2008/09 season, which was probably the greatest success of his career.

The Swiss keeper also played for FC Augsburg and Borussia Dortmund in Germany and can look back on a total of 181 Bundesliga games. With BVB, Hitz also celebrated the Super Cup victory in 2020 and the Cup victory in the 2020/21 season.

His goal on February 21, 2015 for FC Augsburg is also unforgettable. On that occasion, he scored in the 94th minute from a corner kick to make the final score 2:2. Hitz played two international matches for the Swiss national team.
