FC Valencia had hoped until the last minute that Monday evening’s match against Oviedo would go ahead. However, heavy rainfall made it impossible to play the game. A new date has already been set, though.
The match between Valencia and Oviedo has literally been rained off. On Monday afternoon, it was finally decided that it would be impossible to play the match, which was supposed to take place at the Estadio Mestalla at 9 p.m. that evening.
The reason for this is once again the heavy rainfall on the east coast of Spain. A “red warning” was issued for Valencia, prompting the authorities to decide to postpone the match.
Valencia had already issued a warning on Sunday to inform its fans. Around 50 percent of the club’s supporters travel from locations near the city, which is why the club wanted to inform its fans in advance of the risk of a possible cancellation. On Sunday, all outdoor activities were suspended and schools were closed on Monday.
The team from newly promoted Oviedo had already been in Valencia since Sunday and now has to return home to Asturias in northern Spain without having achieved anything. The match will be played on Tuesday at 8 p.m., weather permitting. As neither team is participating in European competition anyway, no scheduling problems were expected.
Storm “DANA” claimed many lives
At the end of October 2024, the Valencia region, among others, was hit by a flood disaster, with Andalusia and Murcia also affected by storm “DANA.” The heavy rainfall triggered flash floods and mudslides. Around 190,000 people were affected by the disaster and 236 people died. It was the most deadly flood disaster in modern Spanish history.
