Hanfmann fails in round two

Yannick Hanfmann came close but missed out on a place in the third round in Shanghai.

Tennis pro Yannick Hanfmann missed out on the third round at the ATP Masters in Shanghai despite leading the set. The Karlsruhe native lost 6:4, 3:6, 2:6 to world number 32 Christopher Eubanks from the USA. After an intense 2:08 hours, Eubanks converted his first match point and will now meet French Open finalist Casper Ruud.

Hanfmann, who has been in good form lately, missed out on a similar surprise in Shanghai as he did at the Masters in Rome, when he reached the quarter-finals. He is the second German professional to be eliminated from the tournament – Daniel Altmaier had already been knocked out in the first round.

Olympic champion Alexander Zverev and German number two Jan-Lennard Struff will enter the tournament in the second round thanks to a bye. Zverev will face Roman Safiullin from Russia on Friday afternoon, Struff will take on Matteo Arnaldi (Italy) on Saturday.
