Haller: “I wanted to feel needed”

Sebastien Haller is currently in impressive form, as evidenced by his many goals in the Eredivisie and also in the Champions League. The attacker in no way describes his return to the Netherlands as a step backwards, and with his “yes” for the Ivory Coast national team he has also accepted another challenge.

Sebastien Haller also cheered against Dortmund in the Champions League.

“I feel really good at the moment,” said Haller in an interview with kicker (Monday). No wonder, as he is currently the top scorer in both the Eredivisie (seven goals) and the Champions League (six goals). The 27-year-old’s well-being is not only down to his scoring prowess; the former Frankfurt man also waxes lyrical about the team spirit at Ajax and Erik ten Hag, “one of the best coaches in the world”.

He thinks back fondly to Eintracht and the 2018/19 European tour, but is also happy to finally be able to play in the top flight: “A dream came true.”

But it’s not just the Champions League, in which he recently duped Borussia Dortmund with Ajax 4:0, that is new territory – because in the future he will also pull on the national jersey of the Ivory Coast. He wanted to “feel needed” and quickly identified with the project, says Haller, who has his sights set on big goals: Winning the Africa Cup and participating in the World Cup in Qatar.
