Excitement is building: The pre-order launch of GTA VI is just around the corner. However, new details about the physical edition are shocking both traditionalists and the retail industry—though the prices, on the other hand, are reassuring.
The pre-order phase for what is arguably the most significant game of our time begins at midnight on Thursday: GTA VI will be available for purchase in just a few hours. While anticipation among some fans has likely grown to almost unimaginable heights, the new information is sobering for others.
In addition to the digital versions, GTA VI will also be released in a physical edition. However, the only truly tangible part of it is the packaging. That’s because it won’t contain a disc, but merely a code that can be used to download the game. This is sure to rub gaming traditionalists the wrong way.
Furthermore, Rockstar Games and Take-Two are disappointing an entire industry: Retailers are left in the lurch, as GTA VI cannot be resold used. Some retailers are reportedly already boycotting the game—partly because they’re directly affected, and partly out of solidarity with other retailers.
No 200-Euro Shock in Sight
While alleged leaks and rumors were circulating just a few days ago that GTA VI would cost up to 200 euros, the developers are now giving their fans a reason to breathe a sigh of relief. Two versions will be available at launch: The Standard Edition will cost 80 euros, while the Ultimate Edition will set you back 100 euros.
Although that’s ten euros more than usual for most AAA titles, the dreaded exorbitant prices have not materialized. Rockstar Games has also confirmed that the pre-download will begin on November 12—one week before the worldwide release. This means the enormous amount of data, currently estimated at between 200 and 300 gigabytes, can be downloaded even before the official release.
