Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong was killed in an armed attack on the team bus of Berekum Chelsea FC. The 20-year-old was traveling back with his team after a match in Ghana’s top division.
As the club Berekum Chelsea FC explained in a statement on Facebook, the team was traveling home from Samreboi to Berekum after a match in the Ghana Premier League at FC Samartex when suddenly “a group of armed robbers” blocked the team bus from continuing its journey.
When the bus driver tried to put the bus in reverse, the masked men armed with submachine guns and assault rifles opened fire, the club added. The team and staff then fled into nearby bushes, with one player seriously injured and taken to hospital shortly afterwards.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) reported in a statement on Monday that 20-year-old player Dominic Frimpong lost his life in the attack. The association is “in constant contact with the club and the relevant authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident continue.”
