The first group stage of the European World Cup qualifiers is over. Germany now knows all of its opponents for the second round and is aware of who it will face in the race to qualify for the 2027 Basketball World Cup in Qatar.
Germany enters the second group stage in a strong position, having finished second in Group E. In Group K, six teams are now competing for three World Cup spots. The DBB team carries over its results against Croatia and Israel from the first round and will now face the three qualifiers from Group F: Poland, Latvia, and the Netherlands. It will play a home-and-away series against each of these three teams. Austria, finishing last in the group, failed to make the top three and was eliminated.
Poland marches confidently through the first round
Poland proved to be one of the most consistent teams in Europe during the first group stage. With a flawless 6-0 record, the 2022 European Championship fourth-place finisher comfortably won its group and heads into the second round as the top seed.
For Germany, Poland is likely to be the strongest new opponent in the second group stage.
Latvia narrowly edges out the competition
Behind Poland, Latvia secured second place with a 3-3 record. Ultimately, the victory over Austria on the final matchday proved decisive. Since the Netherlands lost to Poland in a parallel match, the Balts secured second place in Group F.
Despite its even record, the team is among Europe’s most difficult opponents and will remain a serious contender in the battle for World Cup berths during the second group stage.
The Netherlands complete the field of participants
The Netherlands qualified as the third team to advance to the second round. The Oranje won two of their six matches and prevailed over Austria in the battle for third place.
The Dutch finished the first group stage in third place and can continue to dream of their first World Cup appearance since 1986.
