German Tennis Veteran Impresses

Yannick Hanfmann made a strong debut in Gstaad. The veteran defeated a Spanish player in his opening match of the tournament—Daniel Altmaier also impressed.

A successful start for Yannick Hanfmann in Gstaad: The 34-year-old from Karlsruhe has mastered the transition from grass back to clay and reached the round of 16 at the ATP tournament in Switzerland. In his first-round match, the world No. 51 defeated Spain’s Pedro Martínez 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.

Hanfmann had most recently reached the second round at Wimbledon, where he was eliminated by Russian Karen Khachanov. In Gstaad, he now faces a match against third-seeded Valentin Vacherot of Monaco. Hanfmann is the only German professional in the main draw of the tournament.

Daniel Altmaier also had reason to celebrate on Tuesday: The 27-year-old from Kempen won his opening match at the ATP clay-court tournament in Bastad, Sweden, 6-2, 7-5 against France’s Hugo Gaston. In the round of 16, Altmaier will face Italy’s Luciano Darderi.
