German team climbs to top spot

The away win in Japan gives Jan-Lennard Struff and Co. a new record.

The German men’s tennis team is flying high: their clear 4-0 away win in Japan and the associated re-qualification for the Davis Cup finals in Bologna have earned Germany a new top position in the nation rankings.

The German Tennis Federation (DTB) team, led by captain Michael Kohlmann, moved up one place to third – its best ranking since the ITF introduced the rankings in 2001.

Only Italy and Australia are better

Only Italy, the current Davis Cup winner, and Australia are currently better. “In the last five years, we have shown with two quarterfinals and two semifinals that we are among the absolute best in the world,” said Kohlmann: “The fact that we are now among the top three nations is a significant achievement – it not only recognizes our performance, but also means that, thanks to our second seed position, we will initially avoid a direct duel with defending champions Italy in Bologna.”

The draw for the Davis Cup final round from November 18 to 23 will take place on Wednesday at 12:00 noon in Bologna.
