German precious metal at European Taekwondo Championships

The German Taekwondo fighters have won two bronze medals on the first day of competition at the European Championships in Manchester.

The German Taekwondo fighters have won two bronze medals on the first day of competition at the European Championships in Manchester. Ela Aydin (Dachau) made it to the semi-finals in the 53 kg category, Imran Özkaya (-63 kg) from Neu-Ulm followed up shortly afterwards with his first podium finish at a European Championships in the senior category.

For Aydin, who just missed the qualification for the Olympic Games in Tokyo last year, the gold dream was shattered by a 3:4 defeat in the final round against Zeliha Agris from Turkey. This meant she was assured of bronze, as she had been the year before. “I have trained very hard in the last weeks and the medal shows that I am on the right way to Paris 2024,” said Aydin.

The title bouts end on Sunday, a total of seven men and seven women will compete for the German Taekwondo Union (DTU), including the only Tokyo starter Alexander Bachmann (Stuttgart).
