The German judoka came away empty-handed at the start of the European Championships in Zagreb. In the battle for Olympic qualification in the 57 kg class, Pauline Starke (Hanover) only missed out on a podium place in the bronze medal match against Timna Nelson Levy (Israel) after her semi-final defeat to Kaja Kajzer from the Netherlands.

Former champion Seija Ballhaus was also defeated by Nelson Levy in the hope round in the only competition on the first day of the European Championships featuring athletes from the German Judo Federation after losing in the quarter-finals. Gold went to the Ukrainian Daria Bilodid
