George Russell was sidelined in Monaco by a breakdown of his Fiat Jolly—fans took to social media with plenty of jokes
Mercedes driver George Russell has already suffered several setbacks on the track this season. In Monaco, his run of bad luck continued—at least off the track—when his classic Fiat Jolly broke down on the streets of Monte Carlo.
The Brit was spotted pushing the historic vehicle alongside his partner, Carmen Montero Mundt. Footage of the scene quickly spread on social media, where numerous fans reacted to the incident, jokingly referencing Russell’s season so far.
Fans take the breakdown in stride
One user commented on Reddit: “Whoever Kimi paid to keep George from winning the championship is taking their job very seriously.”
Another wrote: “Georgie just can’t catch a break.” A third user posted: “I know Kimi is behind this, I just can’t prove it.”
The following comment was also posted: “George is the kind of guy who uses up his bad luck in one car so he can have good luck again on race weekend. Leclerc style.” Other reactions included this statement: “Just get this mishap behind us now. The weekend will be fine. Everything will be fine.”
Setbacks after a strong start to the season
Russell had started the 2026 Formula 1 season strongly, winning both the Australian Grand Prix and the sprint race in China. Since then, however, his season has been plagued by various setbacks:
In China, his qualifying session was hampered by several technical issues. In Japan, his race strategy was complicated after he pitted just before a safety car period. At the Canadian Grand Prix, he had to retire while leading due to a battery overheating issue, ending his race prematurely.
Antonelli, on the other hand, won all of Russell’s “mishap-plagued Grand Prix.” The 19-year-old Italian triumphed in China, Japan, Miami, and most recently in Canada. As a result, Russell sits in second place in the drivers’ standings, 43 points behind Antonelli, ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix.
