The Philadelphia 76ers are taking action following a disappointing season: President Daryl Morey is no longer with the franchise. The future of Head Coach Nick Nurse also appears to have been decided.
The decision was officially announced on Tuesday evening by Managing Partner Josh Harris. While President Daryl Morey must leave the franchise, Head Coach Nick Nurse is expected to remain in his position. Harris explained in a statement that, following discussions with Morey, the organization had decided to initiate a “fresh start.” Morey had served as president of the Sixers’ basketball operations since 2020 and led the team to the playoffs five times during that period. However, Philadelphia never advanced past the second round.
Bob Myers will now lead the search for a new top executive. The former architect of four championships with the Golden State Warriors will serve as interim head of the basketball operations department for the time being. Myers announced that he intends to approach the selection process “thoroughly and thoughtfully.” The existing front office will also be evaluated.
Many Headlines Under Morey
Morey’s tenure was marked by several spectacular personnel decisions. In 2022, he brought James Harden to Philadelphia after the two had already enjoyed success together with the Houston Rockets. However, the partnership ended with a public fallout: During a trip to China, Harden called Morey a “liar” before being traded to the Los Angeles Clippers later on.
The high-value contracts for Joel Embiid and Paul George have also come under increasing scrutiny recently. Together with Tyrese Maxey, the three stars will earn a total of $153 million in the upcoming season, but have only played together in 43 games over the past two years, including the playoffs. On the other hand, rookie VJ Edgecombe offers hope; after being selected third overall in the 2025 draft, he played a strong first NBA season and finished third in the Rookie of the Year race.
