Former Swiss international Vega aims to succeed Infantino

Former Swiss international Ramon Vega has his sights set on the top job in world football. The 55-year-old has announced his candidacy for the FIFA presidency and hopes to succeed Gianni Infantino in the election next March.

Ramon Vega is making a fresh attempt: the former Swiss international wants to become FIFA President. As reported by the Klein Report, the 55-year-old has officially announced his candidacy for the election on 18 March 2027 in Rabat. Incumbent Gianni Infantino will be standing for re-election there.

This is not Vega’s first attempt. Several years ago, the former GC player had already announced his intention to challenge Infantino. At the time, however, his candidacy did not materialise because he was unable to secure the necessary support from at least five national associations. It therefore remains to be seen whether he will be able to secure an official candidacy this time around. Interested candidates must submit their applications by 18 November.

Vega calls for reforms

In terms of policy, Vega wants to fundamentally change FIFA. Among other things, he is calling for greater transparency, accountability and independent oversight. Furthermore, players, clubs, leagues and associations should be more closely involved in important decisions.

“It’s not a question of what the FIFA presidency can do for me. It’s about what I can give back to football,” Vega told Klein Report. His campaign slogan is “Service before power. Football comes first”.

Vega is thus the first candidate to have officially announced his challenge to Infantino. The incumbent FIFA President had already stated in April that he intended to stand for re-election in 2027.
