After winning his second league title in his second year at FC Barcelona, Hansi Flick has once again been named Coach of the Year in La Liga. He set a new record with the Catalans.
Hansi Flick has been at the helm of FC Barcelona since the 2024/25 season. After winning the double in his first year in Catalonia, Barca recently celebrated its second consecutive league title with the former German national team coach on the sidelines—the first time since 2019. In fact, no club has managed to win back-to-back titles in Spain’s top flight since then.
Consequently, Flick has now been voted La Liga Coach of the Year for the second time in a row. He edged out Getafe coach José Bordalas and Villarreal coach Marcelino, two managers of surprise-packet teams.
Flick is chasing the Champions League trophy with Barca
Bordalas had led the Madrid-area club to a strong seventh-place finish, but is set to leave after a total of eight years as coach. Despite a confident qualification for the Champions League as the third-place finisher, Marcelino will also no longer be on Villarreal’s bench next season.
The situation is quite different for Flick, who recently extended his contract with Barcelona through 2028. With the Catalans, he is aiming for a third league title in his third year, and in the Champions League, he hopes to finally secure Barca’s first title since 2015.
New Record: Barca with a Perfect Home Record
In the past season, Flick’s team fell to Atlético Madrid in both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Despite inspiring attacking soccer, the defense—which is usually very strong under Flick—proved vulnerable time and again.
The league title, however, was well-deserved with 94 points; a winning streak between November and February, during which they won 17 of 18 games, laid the foundation. In addition, the Catalans won all 19 of their home games—the first team ever to do so since La Liga began playing a 38-match season.
However, it is also true that archrival Real faltered. Ironically, it was a victory in the Clásico in early May that sealed the Blaugrana’s second consecutive league title. The previous year, the title race had remained exciting for longer; at that time, Barça finished the season with 88 points and a four-point lead over Los Blancos.
