Even though it apparently didn’t bring him any luck in the race: Red Bull is auctioning off the racing suit Max Verstappen wore at the Dutch Grand Prix for a good cause
Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 fans currently have the chance to get their hands on a very special treasure: Red Bull is auctioning off the autographed racing suit that the four-time world champion wore at the most recent Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort for a good cause.
That’s because 100 percent of the proceeds from the auction, which is taking place via the “F1 Authentics” platform, will go to the “Wings for Life” foundation. Founded in 2004 by the late Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz and motocross legend Heinz Kinigadner, the foundation conducts research into treatments for spinal cord injuries.
Both Verstappen and Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies support the project as official ambassadors. “Following Max’s contract extension with the team, we are proud to auction off one of his special-edition racing suits from the Dutch Grand Prix to benefit our team’s charity, Wings for Life,” says Mekies.
Verstappen Unlucky at His Dutch Home Race
Verstappen had a turbulent weekend at his home race: On Thursday, the Dutch driver first announced his contract extension with Red Bull through 2030. In Saturday’s Sprint, the Red Bull driver still managed to score three points, before suffering an early exit in the first lap of Sunday’s race.
However, that’s unlikely to affect the suit’s value much. “This special suit, signed by Max, was designed for what is likely to be his last home race, since the Dutch Grand Prix is being removed from the Formula 1 calendar,” recalls team principal Mekies.
“We can turn such a rare piece of racing history into meaningful research.” The auction runs through Sunday, August 30. As of Friday, however, the highest bid was just under 44,000 euros. So Verstappen fans will have to dig deep into their pockets…
