Following Olise’s sending-off: Hamann criticises Bayern’s comments

Bayern star Michael Olise is coming under fire from within his own ranks for his sending-off against Stavanger. Dietmar Hamann is not happy with the harshness of the public criticism.

Following Michael Olise’s sending-off in FC Bayern’s 3–3 draw against Viking Stavanger, Dietmar Hamann has levelled sharp criticism at the way the Munich club has handled the attacking star. The public comments made by manager Vincent Kompany and some of his team-mates about the Frenchman have left the former international baffled.

“When I hear players coming out and saying that was a lack of discipline, alarm bells start ringing for me,” Hamann wrote in his column for Sky. The 53-year-old voiced a controversial suspicion: “I had the feeling that some were just waiting for an opportunity to say something against him, because otherwise he gives them no grounds for criticism.”

FC Bayern: Hamann defends Olise

Hamann did, however, generally show understanding for the criticism of the sending-off: “It’s clear that actions like Olise’s are unacceptable.” However, he added that, given his performances over the past two seasons, Olise is one of the few players who could ‘get away with’ such a slip-up.

Furthermore, frustration was also a factor in the 24-year-old’s action, as the attacking player is regularly subjected to tough challenges from his opponents.

The former Bayern professional takes an even more critical view of Munich’s sporting dependence on Olise. The fact that the record champions were unable to hold on to their 3–2 lead against Stavanger after the player was sent off raises questions about their quality.

Bayern’s dependence on Olise is a cause for concern for Hamann

“The fact that Bayern are more or less lost without Olise is my biggest concern,” emphasised Hamann. The Frenchman is currently the game-changer in attack. “If Olise can’t break down a defence like that, nobody can,” he said, assessing Bayern’s quality.

“It’s nothing new that big teams rely on big players. But I have the feeling that Bayern’s dependence on Olise is currently greater than that of other top teams on their star players,” Hamann continued.

In the upcoming Champions League match against Arsenal, the rest of the Bayern squad now have the opportunity to prove the opposite: Olise will be suspended for this match.
