Flick announces signing – and declares two major goals

Hansi Flick will extend his contract at FC Barcelona by a further year until 2028. The former national team coach made this clear on Tuesday – and set himself two major goals.

The topic has been on the table since mid-March: Hansi Flick is to extend his contract at Barcelona, which runs until 2027, by a further year. President Joan Laporta, who has since been re-elected, had already made his move, but then also explained why Flick is still hesitating to extend his contract at Barcelona.

This Tuesday, however, the FC Barcelona head coach himself announced his signature. Flick will commit himself until 2028 – and has two big goals for himself: “There are two things I want: to win the Champions League and to be coach of Barca when the stadium is finished.” The Catalans were surprisingly defeated by Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The completion of the Camp Nou is dragging on, with the roof work expected to be completed – optimistically – in December 2027.

Flick only has influence on the achievement of sporting goals. But he is optimistic about that: “The Champions League is a big dream for me. I believe we can achieve it because we have a fantastic team.” Which needs to be optimized next summer. “We have to make the right decisions, including on the transfer market, without making any nonsense,” said Flick, who has long since forged the transfer plans with sporting director Deco and wants to keep the framework together: “I think the team is young and has a lot of potential.”

Painful losses at an inopportune time

In the decisive phase of the season in particular, “players who take the lead on the pitch” are needed. According to Flick, Frenkie de Jong and Raphinha were missing from this category due to injury.

In general, Flick is enjoying life and work at Barcelona to the full. “I had a great time with the national team and also with other clubs like FC Bayern. But here I really feel that everything around me is simply the best. My career, my life … we really enjoy it here. My family and my staff enjoy Barcelona and are happy to be here,“ said the 61-year-old.

The great team chemistry also gives him a ”very good feeling” for the future. “The elimination from the Champions League is of course a motivation for us. We have to stick together and keep trying until it hopefully works out very soon,” said Flick. Laporta and the fans wouldn’t mind.
