The Czech duo Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik won the mixed doubles competition at the U.S. Open. In the tournament—where a woman and a man play side by side—the two professional tennis players defeated Belinda Bencic of Switzerland and her Italian partner Flavio Cobolli 6–3, 1–6, 10–6 in the final.
In the semifinals, the eventual champions had previously defeated the Russians Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev 5-4, 3-5, 11-9. For both Muchova and Mensik, the subsequent victory in the final marked their first Grand Slam title.
“In the end, the right outfits made the difference for us,” joked Muchova at the award ceremony, alluding to the white-and-chestnut-brown jerseys the team was wearing.
Tennis: Zverev was eliminated in the first round
The mixed doubles competition, scheduled immediately before the singles tournament, took place this year for only the second time in a new format. This format includes shortened sets and multiple matches in a single day.
German pro Alexander Zverev and his partner Taylor Townsend (USA) were eliminated in the first round by the eventual finalists Bencic/Cobolli.
Carlos Alcaraz made his comeback alongside 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, but they also lost to Bencic/Cobolli in the quarterfinals.
