Ausieden gegen den VfL Osnabrück, weitergekommen gegen den VfL Osnabrück: Maximilian Eggestein managed a curiosity on Tuesday – but he was not the first.
Even though Werder Bremen couldn’t buy anything from it, Maximilian Eggestein “avenged” his ex-club in a curious way on Tuesday evening: In the 1st DFB Cup round he had failed in the Werder jersey against VfL Osnabrück (0:2), in the 2nd he threw the third division club out with SC Freiburg after all, scoring in the penalty shootout (3:2).
Eggestein, who joined Sport-Club a few days after Bremen’s elimination, is only the twelfth player in the history of the competition to face the same opponent twice in different rounds within one season.
The last player to get revenge was Cedric Teuchert in 2017/18: With 1. FC Nürnberg he lost to VfL Wolfsburg in the round of 16 (0:2 n.V.), with FC Schalke 04 he defeated them 1:0 one round later.
Kobel has a tough time with Leipzig, Hartherz with Saarbrücken
Angelos Charisteas had even managed a similar feat against FC Bayern once, again FCN was the “avenger”: the 0:2 with Nuremberg in Munich in the 2nd round 2008/09 was followed two rounds later by a 4:2 against Bayern as a player on loan from Bayer Leverkusen. Shortly after his substitution, the European champion set up the final goal.
Sometimes, however, a cup opponent turns out to be a double nightmare. Gregor Kobel, for example, failed in 2018/19 with both Hoffenheim (2nd round, 0:2) and Augsburg (quarter-final, 1:2) against the eventual finalists RB Leipzig. And Florian Hartherz even lost twice to the outsiders 1. FC Saarbrücken in 2013/14 – in the 1st round with Werder (1:3 n.V.), in the 2nd with Paderborn (1:2).
