Domenicali Announces: More Sprint Races in Formula 1 in 2027!

There will be more sprint races in the 2027 Formula 1 season: The number will increase from six to nine or ten, with one race already confirmed

Formula 1 is expected to have more sprint races in the 2027 season. “That will happen when we announce the calendar very, very soon,” Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali reveals in an interview with Sky Sports.

This season’s schedule includes six sprint weekends; in 2027, that number is set to rise to nine or ten—a move Domenicali believes is the right direction: “If we think back to the beginning, people were always skeptical of what we were doing, and I think we have a duty to be bold in a certain way and think outside the box,” he says.

“With the 150,000 people we had at Silverstone on Friday—if we don’t offer them something with action, that would be wrong,” said the Formula 1 boss. “That’s why I think this is the right path, and we’re currently in the process of announcing a larger number for the future.”

In 2026, Formula 1 will hold its sprint races in Shanghai, Miami, Montreal, Silverstone, Zandvoort, and Singapore. Which races will feature a sprint weekend in 2027 will be announced shortly, but one location has already been confirmed: Monza.

“We have reached an agreement that we will host the sprint race for three years starting next year,” confirms Geronimo La Russa, president of the Italian Automobile Association (ACI). This means that Monza will host a sprint race alongside the actual Grand Prix through 2029.

The historic Italian circuit already hosted the second sprint race in Formula 1 history back in 2021. At that time, Silverstone, Monza, and São Paulo were chosen as test venues for the new format, which at the time still determined the Grand Prix starting grid. Monza has not hosted a sprint race since then.

The race was won by Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas, but the main race was then surprisingly won by Daniel Ricciardo, who, together with Lando Norris, celebrated a one-two finish for McLaren.

Sprint races have been part of Formula 1 since the 2021 season. While three events were held at the start, the number increased to six starting in 2023, with the format being refined repeatedly over the years. The next phase is set to begin in 2027.
