Djokovic changes plans

The tennis superstar from Serbia still needs points to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin.

Novak Djokovic has accepted a wildcard for the ATP tournament in Basel. In his bid to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin, the Serbian tennis superstar will be playing at the tournament in Switzerland (starting 26 October) for the first time since 2011, as the organisers announced on Friday.

After winning his 102nd career title in Beijing earlier this month, Djokovic had announced that he intended to play only the Masters tournament in Paris before heading to Turin. However, his participation in Basel was also facilitated by the postponement of the financially lucrative ‘Six Kings Slam’ exhibition tournament, which was originally due to take place next week in Saudi Arabia.

Djokovic still needs more points to qualify for the Finals, which feature the season’s top eight players. Following world number one Jannik Sinner’s injury-enforced end to the season, only Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz are currently guaranteed a place in Turin. The Serbian is currently ranked only tenth in the ‘Race’.

Djokovic has won the ATP Finals seven times in his career, most recently in 2023. The record Grand Slam champion missed the last two editions of the tournament, which has been held in Turin since 2021, due to injury.
