Disappointment for Lys Ahead of Wimbledon

The Hamburg native squandered several chances in the sweltering heat and was eliminated by Emma Navarro. As a result, there are no German players left in the tournament.

No surprises in the dress rehearsal: Eva Lys heads to the grass-court classic at Wimbledon with a disappointment in tow.

The world No. 77 lost her first-round match in Bad Homburg to the seasoned American Emma Navarro 6-7 (6-8), 3–6—because she failed to capitalize on several opportunities.

Lys, who was the only German woman competing in the singles draw at this highly competitive tournament following her round-of-16 exit in Berlin, got off to a solid start despite sweltering temperatures of over 30 degrees.

Tennis: Lys squanders three set points in the tiebreak

In the tiebreak of the closely contested first set, however, the Hamburg native failed to convert three set points. Navarro, ranked 24th in the world, didn’t let anything throw her off course after that.

Lys will now move on to Wimbledon (starting Monday); last year, she reached the second round at the third Grand Slam of the tennis season. She’s likely hoping for cooler temperatures this time around.

“In this heat, professional tennis feels like a questionable life choice,” Lys had written on Instagram ahead of her match against Navarro.
