Derby against Benfica: Sporting wins League Cup

Sporting Lisbon won the League Cup in Portugal against rivals Benfica (2:1). The decisive goal was scored by summer newcomer Sarabia.

Sporting have now defended the League Cup after 2021, with a 1-0 win over Sporting Braga in last year’s final. Benfica, with Germany’s Weigl playing through, got off to the better start though and took the lead after 22 minutes through Everton. That was the lead they took into the dressing room.

After the break, Sporting equalised quickly when Goncalo Inacio headed home a Sarabia corner from the left (49th). And it got even better for coach Ruben Amorim’s team, because after a long ball, summer newcomer Sarabia (on loan from PSG) was free and finished down the right.

The score remained 2-1 in Sporting’s favour and they won their fourth League Cup title after 2018, 2019 and 2020. Benfica have won the competition, which has existed since the 2007/08 season, the most times with seven in total. After the group stage, which consisted of four groups of three teams each, the top teams advanced. The semi-finals and finals followed.
