It’s now official: Kevin Trapp is leaving Eintracht Frankfurt and moving to French Ligue 1 newcomers FC Paris. This is his second spell in the French capital.
Kevin Trapp took the same path back in 2015, when he joined Paris Saint-Germain. On his second return to the French capital, he is now starting a new chapter with FC Paris. The 35-year-old keeper has signed a contract with the Ligue 1 newcomers until June 2028. According to kicker, the transfer fee amounts to 1.5 million euros.
“It’s hard for me to find the right words today. Because I have two feelings: anticipation and sadness. I’m looking forward to a new chapter, but at the same time I’m sad to have to say goodbye to Eintracht for good. I was, am, and will always be an Eagle,” Trapp is quoted as saying in an SGE statement.
“I grew up, became an adult and matured at Frankfurt – as a footballer and as a person. I love Frankfurt, every corner of this club. My club. I am and will remain one of you. We have written chapters that will always connect us. A chapter from the heart.”
Nevertheless, he feels it is time to leave, “because I have found the perfect moment to try something new, something that excites and challenges me.” He also makes no secret of his attachment to Paris, where “new experiences” now await him: “I became a leading player in Paris back then. I was able to learn valuable lessons that I was able to bring to Frankfurt. My love for this city has remained. I have never made a secret of it. I combine wonderful things from Frankfurt and Paris within myself.“
Meanwhile, Trapp believes Eintracht is ”in good hands with Kaua Santos and the entire goalkeeping team. He is a great guy and an outstanding goalkeeper. I don’t have to feel guilty, on the contrary. With him, Eintracht is in excellent shape. A new era is dawning for all of us. I am certain it will be a great one.”
Eintracht loses figurehead
Eintracht is losing a long-standing figurehead, a face of the club. Trapp played for the Eagles between 2012 and 2015 and since 2018, keeping goal for the club 293 times in the Bundesliga and captaining Frankfurt for many years. He also played eight games in the Champions League and 44 in the Europa League, and kept goal for Eintracht 23 times in the DFB Cup. With SGE, he celebrated a historic triumph in the Europa League in the 2021/22 season – Eintracht’s first international title in 42 years.
However, there were already signs last season that the Trapp era could be coming to an end. In the fall of 2024 and spring of 2025, when Trapp was out with injury for several weeks, Kaua Santos put in some spectacular performances, but also made a few mistakes. The future in the Eintracht goal undoubtedly belongs to the 22-year-old Brazilian, who suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in the Europa League quarter-final against Tottenham. As the injury was treated conservatively, Kaua Santos is already back in training with the team.
However, the goalkeeper will not rush things and will not take any risks. It is expected to be several weeks before he returns to goal. Until his comeback, he will be replaced by Michael Zetterer, who Eintracht have signed from Werder Bremen. The official announcement of the transfer is expected to be made on Wednesday.
Trapp’s departure was emotional, with the club releasing several videos on Tuesday evening. Visibly moved, the goalkeeper said goodbye to the fans and looked back on his successful years on the Main. It is a picture-perfect ending that is by no means always possible in top-flight football. A farewell without any fuss, but with all the more heart. Trapp will always be welcomed back to Frankfurt with open arms.
