Alexander Zverev is representing Germany in the Davis Cup. Just a few days after winning the US Open title, the world number two is travelling to East Westphalia.
Despite the gruelling journey to his US Open title in New York, Alexander Zverev is keeping his promise and will take to the court for the German tennis team in the Davis Cup this weekend.
Two days after his final victory over American Ben Shelton at the season’s final Grand Slam tournament, Zverev put an end to speculation about his participation in the tie against Croatia. In Halle/Westphalia on Saturday and Sunday, the team will be competing for a place in the final tournament featuring the top eight teams in November.
Kohlmann: “We’re delighted that Zverev is coming”
“We’re delighted that Alexander is coming to our home match in Halle, despite the huge physical strain following this extraordinary Grand Slam season and his US Open triumph,” said Germany’s Davis Cup captain Michael Kohlmann: “This is a great sign for our team and German tennis fans.” Zverev is expected to arrive on Thursday.
As recently as Sunday, Zverev had left his Davis Cup participation open. He himself was keen to play, but his team would advise against it, he had said after the final.
Zverev last played for Germany at the 2025 Finals, when the German Tennis Federation (DTB) team were knocked out by Spain in the semi-finals. At the start of the season, Zverev missed the first-round match against Peru in Düsseldorf following a gruelling few weeks and reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
ATP World Rankings: Zverev aims to overtake Sinner
After the Davis Cup in East Westphalia, the 29-year-old faces a packed end-of-season schedule, during which he can achieve another career goal: the number one spot in the world rankings, currently held by the recently injured Italian Jannik Sinner, is no longer far off. To date, Boris Becker has been the only German to top the men’s rankings.
After Halle, Zverev’s next event is the Laver Cup in London (25 to 27 September). He is a regular at this exhibition event, which was launched by Roger Federer. Alongside his commitments on the ATP Tour, where he can earn world ranking points, Zverev’s schedule also includes the multi-million ‘Six Kings Slam’ invitational spectacle in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (21–24 October), which is being marketed by the streaming service Netflix.
