The German-born Peruvian continues to cause a sensation at Rothenbaum.
Peruvian dark horse Ignacio Buse and Altmaier-beater Tommy Paul will face off in the final of the tennis tournament at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum on Saturday.
Qualifier Buse defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic (USA) 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals, continuing his unexpected winning streak. Paul defeated world No. 9 Alex de Minaur (Australia) 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Buse plans to apply for a German passport
The 22-year-old Buse arrived in Hamburg ranked 57th in the world and advanced to the main draw with two wins in qualifying. After four more victories—including a first-round win over defending champion Flavio Cobolli—Buse will be ranked at least 36th in the new world rankings.
The rising star is of German descent and has already announced his intention to apply for a German passport. He also hails from Peru’s most famous tennis family: His grandfather Eduardo and his twin brother Enrique were stars in the 1940s, and the tennis stadium in Lima bears the name “Hermanos Buse.”
