Crashing defeat for Maria

Tatjana Maria is out of Cincinnati. One day after her 38th birthday, she lost in less than an hour of play.

Tennis player Tatjana Maria has missed out on a place in the third round of the WTA tournament in Cincinnati after a crushing defeat.

One day after her 38th birthday, the current world number 41 lost 0-6, 1-6 to Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine in just 51 minutes. After Wimbledon surprise Laura Siegemund, Maria is the second of four German players to be eliminated from the tournament in the US state of Ohio.

In the evening, Eva Lys will face sixth seed Madison Keys from the USA, winner of the Australian Open. Ella Seidel, who won her first-round match 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 against Russia’s Polina Kudermetova, will then play against the US American Emma Navarro, number eight in the seedings, on Sunday.
