Court date brought forward: Hernandez already back in Munich on Monday

Bayern professional Lucas Hernandez already appeared in court in Madrid on Monday. The further legal course now depends on the Madrid Higher Regional Court.

Julian Nagelsmann was already firmly expecting Lucas Hernandez to be available to him for the Champions League game at Benfica Lisbon on Sunday. “He’s there as normal in my plans,” said the FC Bayern coach, “and if he’s healthy, he’ll do the game.”

Now the central defender’s deployment on Wednesday has become even more likely: Although he had actually only been summoned for Tuesday, he already appeared in court in Madrid on Monday. According to information from the Deutsche Presse-Agentur, the Frenchman is also expected back in Munich on Monday, with the Bayern squad setting off for Lisbon on Tuesday.

At the court hearing, he was personally and officially notified that he may have to serve a six-month prison sentence within the next ten days, the court in charge told Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

Hernandez hopes to appeal

Now it is a matter of waiting for the decision of the Madrid Higher Regional Court on an appeal filed by Hernandez’ lawyers, the court spokesman added. However, if the appeal is not heard by midnight on 28 October, the Frenchman will have to serve his sentence in a Spanish prison of his choice.
The said prison sentence had already been ordered in December 2019 for violating a no-approach and no-contact order against his then girlfriend and now wife. It was triggered by a physical altercation in February 2017, as a result of which both had been sentenced to community service and a six-month contact ban for domestic violence.
