Corona: Eriksen’s trip to national team delayed

Christian Eriksen, who was nominated for Denmark’s international double in March, has had to postpone his trip to the national team.

Eriksen is due to play for his home country again just over nine months after suffering a cardiac arrest at last summer’s European Championship finals, but has caught the coronavirus and had to go into quarantine in England. Eriksen will not join the team on Monday as planned, but his international comeback is still expected to take place next Saturday.

Denmark national coach Kasper Hjulmand had nominated the midfielder from Premier League club FC Brentford for the test internationals in the Netherlands (26 March) and against Serbia (29 March). “I was in London recently to see him. I saw him in training and in the game and he is physically very, very fit,” the former Mainz Bundesliga coach had said of the 30-year-old. “We expect to see Christian as soon as possible during the week,” Hjulmand was quoted as saying on the Danish Football Union’s (DBU) Twitter channel. “We look forward to having him in the team and count on him in the exciting test matches against the Netherlands and Serbia.”

Eriksen had been fitted with a defibrillator, after he collapsed and had to be resuscitated in Denmark’s first European Championship group match against Finland in Copenhagen on 12 June. He had made his comeback for Brentford in February.
