Vincent Kompany was admitted to a Munich hospital on Friday, accompanied by an emergency doctor. The exact reasons are as yet unknown. FC Bayern have since issued a statement.
On Friday evening, there was a flurry of activity at Bayern’s training ground. A helicopter carrying an emergency doctor landed at Säbener Straße, and coach Vincent Kompany was subsequently accompanied by the doctor and taken to hospital in an ambulance. *Bild* was the first to report the story. According to Sky, he is said to have collapsed after a training session. It is currently unclear how the 40-year-old is faring.
Early in the evening, FC Bayern confirmed the incident in a statement. “Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during a training session with the FC Bayern amateurs. The first-team manager had been watching the reserve team’s session. Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care,” the statement read. “Until further notice, his coaching team will be managing training and match operations.”
Sporting director Max Eberl assured the manager of the club’s full support. “Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching staff, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
Viral infection took its toll on Kompany
The Belgian had recently been suffering from a viral infection, which had severely limited his activities. Although he had given the pre-match team talk ahead of the 6–1 win against RB Leipzig, he then had to withdraw during and immediately after the match to rest. He did not give any interviews after the final whistle.
He was also only able to participate to a limited extent in the run-up to the Champions League clash against Arsenal (2–2). On Monday, he missed training, as he did the final training session on Tuesday; he was represented by assistant manager Aaron Danks at the press conference. During the match, however, Kompany was back on the touchline and explained afterwards that he had “caught a rather nasty virus” and had then failed to listen to his body – “and then at some point my body said: ‘Right, that’s enough now!’”
