Coaching change in Braunschweig: Ramirez leaves Löwen – Papazoglou takes over

The Basketball Löwen Braunschweig are losing their head coach Jesus Ramirez. After four successful years, the Spaniard is returning to his home country and handing over the reins to his former assistant.

According to the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper, Jesus Ramirez is leaving Basketball Löwen Braunschweig ahead of schedule to accept an offer from his home country. The 45-year-old Spaniard is set to take over Basket Zaragoza in the Spanish ACB League. Ramirez had only extended his contract in Braunschweig last season until 2027, but has now decided to make a change.

His successor has apparently already been decided: Kostas Papazoglou, previously assistant coach of the Lions, will take over the team. The 41-year-old Greek has been with the club since 2020, making him even longer in Braunschweig than Ramírez. This will be Papazoglou’s first position as head coach.

Ramirez played a key role in the team’s sporting resurgence during his four years in charge. In addition to finishing third in the main round last season, he was considered a promoter of young talent, which fit well with the club’s philosophy under principal shareholder Dennis Schröder. Nevertheless, his departure did not come as a complete surprise: according to reports, Ramirez even interrupted his vacation to hold exit talks in Braunschweig.
