Championship race stalls: Bayern and leaders Bonn with home defeats

FC Bayern suffered a setback in the BBL championship race on Sunday. The Munich team lost to Chemnitz. In the evening, the Bonners were unable to take advantage of the advantage.

After their cup triumph, the Niners Chemnitz have also beaten title contender FC Bayern in the Bundesliga. The Saxons won 65:63 (31:42) at the big favourites and underlined their play-off ambitions with a record of 10:5 wins. The Bavarians (11:4) remain second in the table.

In the quarter-finals of the cup, Chemnitz had already surprisingly eliminated the Munich team with an 85-80 win. Trent Lockett was the best scorer for the visitors with 13 points. For the Bavarians, Deshaun Thomas was the most successful with 19 points.

While the guests were the better team in the first quarter and were 19:16 ahead, Bayern took control of the game until the break and led by eleven points after 20 minutes.

Chemnitz got back into the match better after the change of ends and could reduce the lead to five points (46:51/30th minute). In a match characterised by tension, the Bavarians led 63:62 one minute before the end, before Lockett was able to turn the game around again with a successful distance throw just 25 seconds before the end and ensure Chemnitz’ success.

Bonn can’t make use of advantage

Leaders of the table Telekom Baskets Bonn also fluffed. The Rhinelanders lost to Hamburg Towers 80:92 (38:52), but remain in first place with a record of 12:4. The visitors (9:6) are in ninth place in the race for the coveted playoffs.

Bonn already had to accept the first setback before the match. Karsten Tadda and Javontae Hawkins tested positive for the corona virus on Friday and were absent for the Baskets. For the Hanseatic League, Caleb Homesley excelled with 33 points.
