BVB boss is reminded of a painful memory

Borussia Dortmund have once again let a win slip against Werder Bremen – which has brought back painful memories for Lars Ricken.

Following the late equaliser in Friday evening’s match, painful memories have resurfaced for Borussia Dortmund’s managing director, Lars Ricken. The BVB boss was reminded of a similar, if not even greater, disappointment from 2022.

Back then, too, the Black and Yellows squandered a 2–0 lead in front of their home crowd against the visitors from the Weser. The difference: four years ago, it didn’t end in a draw; Werder scored first in the 89th minute and then twice in stoppage time – thus snatching all three points with a 3–2 victory.

BVB boss Ricken: “We didn’t really get forward after that”

“Yes, after the 2–2,” he “definitely” thought back to that defeat, said the 50-year-old: “We didn’t really get forward after that and didn’t have any more chances to score. So you do end up thinking about it.”

Dortmund had scored in the 80th and 85th minutes, and the match seemed to be decided after goals from Daniel Svensson and Nico Schlotterbeck. But Ludovit Reis (88th) and Füllkrug ultimately made Bremen feel like the winners.

BVB now top the table by three points, though FC Bayern could still overtake them – as could SC Freiburg – with a win at FC Augsburg on Saturday (3.30 pm).

Incidentally, the clash four years ago took place on matchday 3. At the end of the season, Borussia finished in second place, level on points with the Munich side.
