Real Betis inflicted Villarreal FC’s first defeat – and first goal conceded – of the 2022/23 La Liga season with a 1-0 win in a tight game.
In a turbulent first half, both teams had good periods. Betis had the upper hand at the start, but as the game progressed Villarreal came into the game better but missed several good opportunities to score.
The decision would not be made until after the break. Betis were now more determined and took the lead in the 61st minute: after a wonderful cross from Luiz Henrique, Rodri pushed the ball over the line at the left post with a quite demanding drop kick. After 420 minutes, Villarreal conceded their first goal in their fifth La Liga match.
The “yellow submarine” tried to equalise, but failed to create any clear-cut chances against the passionate Andalusians. Betis overtook Real and Barça and moved up to third place.
In La Liga, Betis will play again next Sunday (2 p.m.) at home against FC Girona. Villarreal host Sevilla FC a little later (4.15pm).
Even before that – also at home – Betis receive Lodugorez Rasgrad in the Europa League on Thursday (9pm). At the same time, Villarreal take on Hapoel Beer Sheva in the Europa Conference League.
