FC Bayern Munich has finalized its latest signing. Austin Wiley, one of Europe’s most dominant rebounders, is coming to Munich and has signed a long-term contract right away.
FC Bayern Munich has further strengthened its frontcourt for the upcoming season. The Munich club has signed center Austin Wiley from Hapoel Jerusalem and awarded the American a three-year contract. The 27-year-old is considered one of the best rebounders in Europe and is expected to play a key role—especially on defense—under new head coach Anton Gavel.
Wiley has impressed in nearly every league he’s played in over the past few years. Most recently, the 2.08-meter-tall center led the EuroCup with an average of 9.5 rebounds per game. He also averaged 10.4 points and 1.5 blocks per game for Hapoel Jerusalem.
Prior to that, Wiley was the top rebounder in both the Lithuanian League and the Turkish Süper Lig, where he was even named MVP during the 2023–24 season. His strengths lie primarily under the basket, where his athleticism, physicality, and rim protection make him one of the most prominent big men in Europe.
Gavel is pleased with his defensive anchor
“I want to be the team’s defensive anchor in every game and control the paint,” Wiley said after signing his contract. At the same time, the American expressed confidence that he can take the next step in the EuroLeague.
Head coach Anton Gavel also sees his new signing as a key addition. Wiley will be a huge help to the team with his rebounding, his ability to disrupt shots, and his defensive versatility. Sports Director Thorsten Leibenath also highlighted the center’s tireless effort and believes he can play an important offensive role in conjunction with Munich’s guards.
The center is already familiar with German basketball from his previous stints with the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg and the Gladiators Trier. Now Wiley is returning to Germany.
