Bayern candidate Emery extends long-term contract at Aston Villa

After national coach Julian Nagelsmann, the next Bayern candidate is out of the running: Unai Emery signed a new three-year contract with Aston Villa on Tuesday until June 30, 2027

February exclusively unveiled him as a coaching candidate at FC Bayern, and a conversation between Munich officials and the Spaniard also took place. However, the 52-year-old has decided to stay at Aston Villa

As the club announced on Tuesday afternoon, Emery has signed a new contract with the Premier League fourth-placed side until June 30, 2027. The two ambitious owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens are thus keeping their successful coach for the long term. The duo are said to be convinced that Emery could even shape an era like Sir Alex Ferguson once did at Manchester United, according to The Athletic.

“The management and I share the vision of the owners,” Emery was quoted as saying in a club statement on Tuesday. He announced: “We will work to get better and better. And we will challenge each other. Ambition is already the motto of this project and must always remain so.”

Emery had left Villarreal FC head over heels in October 2022 to take up a new position in the Premier League. His almost one and a half years at Arsenal had come to an abrupt end. At Birmingham, however, Emery hit the ground running as the successor to the sacked Steven Gerrard. The former relegation candidates finished seventh in the Premier League and moved into the Conference League

Emery knows how Europe works

The Villans have already advanced to the semi-finals in this competition. There, too, they are favorites against Olympiakos Piraeus. The dream of winning their first European title since 1982 is alive and well. In the league, Villa are only behind Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City on 60 points and currently have a six-point lead over Tottenham Hotspur – although the north Londoners have two games in hand.

Nevertheless, it is highly likely that Villa will be competing in the Champions League next season. In 77 games as Villa coach, Emery scored an average of 1.9 points. And he knows all too well how to win European titles: Emery won the Europa League four times with Sevilla and Villarreal
