Steve Kerr remains head coach of the Golden State Warriors. The four-time championship-winning coach has now extended his contract with the Warriors by another two years.
This was reported by Shams Charania (ESPN), who cites Kerr’s advisory team as his source. The 60-year-old is signing on for two more years and is expected to remain the highest-paid coach in the NBA. Last year, Kerr reportedly earned around $17.5 million for his services.
Recently, there had been doubts as to whether Kerr would remain on the sidelines. In recent weeks, there were several meetings with owner Joe Lacob and GM Mike Dunleavy to explore possible scenarios for continuing the relationship.
Meanwhile, the Warriors had a disappointing season. With a 37-45 record, they finished in tenth place in the Western Conference and were immediately eliminated in the first play-in game against the L.A. Clippers. However, Stephen Curry was sidelined for several weeks due to injury, and Jimmy Butler suffered a torn ACL.
Kerr is the NBA’s second-longest-tenured coach behind Miami’s Erik Spoelstra; the former Chicago Bulls player has coached the Warriors since 2014 and led them to championships in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. They also reached the Finals in 2016 and 2019. Under Kerr, the Warriors have won 604 of 957 games; only Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, and Gregg Popovich have broken the 600-win barrier faster.
