Atletico without Joao Felix

Atletico Madrid have suffered a major setback in their fight for a Champions League place in La Liga

Portuguese attacker Joao Felix picked up a thigh injury in Sunday’s 2-1 home win over Espanyol Barcelona and after examinations he shared on Instagram: “Unfortunately I don’t see myself being able to help my team in the last games of the season.” The 22-year-old is the third highest scorer in league games with eight goals for the season behind Angel Correa and Luis Suarez (both eleven goals).

The Colchoneros, who were defeated by Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals last week, are level with second-placed FC Barcelona (one game down) and Sevilla FC in fourth place in the table (all 60 points) after 32 of 38 games and still eligible for the top flight. Three points behind them is Real Betis, the second club from Sevilla.

Home game against Granada

In addition to Joao Felix, who had been performing consistently well in recent weeks, Thomas Lemar (four goals in the league) also suffered a left thigh injury in the game against Espanyol and is also out.

Atletico’s English week in Spain continues with a home game against relegation-threatened FC Granada on Wednesday night.
